Doug Smith is the founder of Aurelius Law Group LLC. Before founding the firm, Doug was a litigation partner in the Chicago office of Kirkland & Ellis, where he served as trial and appellate counsel in mass tort, product liability, bankruptcy, environmental, intellectual property, securities, and commercial cases, including large multidistrict litigation proceedings and class action disputes.
In addition to his work in the private sector, Doug also served as the chief litigator in charge of the Torts Branch of the U.S. Department of Justice, responsible for representing the United States and its officials, including the President and the Attorney General, in all tort actions in federal courts. In this role, he was also responsible for overseeing the multi-billion-dollar 9/11 Victims Compensation Fund, National Vaccine Injury Compensation Program, and Radiation Exposure Compensation Program. In addition to his work in the Torts Branch, Doug was also Chief of Staff to the Assistant Attorney General for the Civil Division.
Doug has published more than 40 scholarly articles and books, including a recent book on multidistrict and mass tort litigation published by the American Bar Association and an online treatise on scientific evidence for Bloomberg Law. His work has been cited in the press and by multiple courts, including the Supreme Court of the United States.
