Government Litigation

Many cases in which Doug Smith has been involved have included claims brought by government entities.  For example, Doug has:

Represented a consumer product manufacturer in nationwide litigation involving consumer fraud claims brought by multiple state governments. 

Participated in nationwide litigation and arbitration proceedings against state government entities regarding disputed payments under the tobacco Master Settlement Agreement.

Represented a defendant holding company in a RICO action brought by the U.S. Department of Justice seeking billions of dollars from various tobacco manufacturers, obtaining voluntary dismissal.

Represented multiple criminal defendants as well as individuals bringing civil rights claims against government entities on a pro bono basis.

In addition, Doug has also represented federal, state and local governments in litigation.  For example:

Served as Deputy Assistant Attorney General for the Torts Branch and Chief of Staff in the Civil Division of the U.S. Department of Justice.

Represented the State of Illinois as a Special Assistant Attorney General, successfully defending the Governor's order community the sentences of individuals on death row.

Represented the City of Chicago in litigation defending pension reform legislation.
